Saint Valentine's Day: How Did It Begin?

February 14 is just around the corner. For some people, it gives them the butterflies. For others, the hives. Whether you’re excited about it or dread it like a bad date (with awful manners and body odor, to boot), here are a few things that are fun to know about Saint Valentine’s Day. Hey, you might just be able to use this trivia to make that guy or girl notice you!
There is more than one Saint Valentine, according to Catholic tradition. One of them was said to have been jailed for his religion. While behind bars, he fell in love with a girl, and right before he was killed by his captors, sent her a letter declaring his love. The first ever Valentine.
The Valentine tradition became popular in Great Britain during the 17th century, marking a time when birds would look for their mates. According to superstition, when two people meet on Saint Valentine’s Day, they would get married. Shakespeare had something to say about it:
“To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine.”
